Clark was glad that he'd come alone. Lex wouldn't have managed to avoid snarking at Pete. They were getting ready to leave and he'd come to tell Pete goodbye. Pete was the only one left. Chloe had died chasing a story. Lana never left Smallville, and a stalking mutant had taken her out while Superman was rescuing victims of a flood. Lois – well the less said about Lois the better – Lex still hated her for the time she had taken Clark from him.
"So, how is Lex? He never makes public appearances anymore. What's the matter – he getting all wrinkled?"
Clark looked at Pete wondering how some one could be so angry after all the years that had passed.
"Lex is fine. He has his reasons for not appearing in public. We're going to be going away for a while."
"Where is he taking you this time? I'd have thought you two would be over this by now."
Clark frowned; irritated with Pete's attitude. "We're thinking of going someplace warm."
"Hope you have gallons of sun block for the pigmently challenged."
Clark wondered why he'd come here. At one time Pete had been his best friend, the first to know his secret. He'd even been VP when Lex was in the White House. Somewhere along the line the tact meter in Pete's brain had gone on permanent vacation.
"I have go, Pete. Just wanted to come by to see you before we head out."
"You be gone long?"
"Maybe. We haven't really decided."
"Have a good trip. Bring me back something."
"Sure, man. You take care."
Clark squeezed his shoulder and walked away. Lex was waiting by the limo when he walked out. Mercy standing by his side, Hope just a few feet away. Lex didn't say anything. He could see the sadness in his lover's eyes.
"Ready, Clark?"
"Yeah, I'm ready."
They climbed into the limo. Lex didn't speak, he merely offered the comfort Clark needed. He didn't complain when his legs went to sleep under the weight of his lover's body. He didn't care that his shirt was soaked with Clark's tears.
It had been eighty years since the day they met. Eighty years of ups and downs, fights and lovemaking, happiness and sorrow. Lex was the only person on Earth to know the depth of devotion a Kryptonian brought to relationships. That was the thing the others never understood. It was the chief reason Lex had ended up with Clark.
Like the Highlander, the time had come for Lex to get a new life, he was tired of hiding or wearing makeup to look older. With the AI's help they had set up several shell identities for his next life, it was just a matter of deciding which one he wanted to use.
The limo pulled to a stop at the airfield. Clark could have flown them anywhere in the world but Lex needed more baggage than Clark could carry with Lex in his arms. They settled into the seats and Clark fell into a deep sleep.
Lex kept watch over his lover as they flew though the night toward a new beginning.
The end.
